ISSSEEM Science Symposium 2018
Online: Beginning Oct. 6, 2018

International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine:  Science Symposium

Welcome!
We welcome you to our annual ISSSEEM Research Symposium. ISSSEEM Science is an interdisciplinary society interested in the scientific exploration of integrative healing, applied spirituality and the subtle realms. This symposium is fundamental to an open-minded search for knowledge, providing information, careful research and theories that advance our understanding of humanity, nature and the workings of the universe.
We invite you to explore, discover, observe, think carefully and dialogue!

Dr. Melinda Connor

From Melinda Connor, Symposium Chair:
ISSSEEM was created in 1989 to support and present research into subtle energies and energy medicine. In the letter that was sent out inviting members to join the new Society, Elmer Green wrote that this was, “… a field which though acknowledged to exist by many researchers and clinicians, rarely has received serious scientific study, and seldom has received funds sufficient for definitive research.”

In 2008,  ISSSEEM Science was created to bring ISSSEEM back to its original purpose of the scientific study of subtle energy, spirituality, and consciousness.  ISSSEEM Science has been held both concurrently with the main conference in some years, and separately in others.  In order to meet the needs of a growing and diverse scientific community, this years research symposium will be held online and available for on-demand viewing beginning October 2018.

The Research Symposium has a four-fold purpose:
1) To present on-going, good quality, academic research that meets consistent standards of care and skill in research design.
2) To support people beginning to do research by teaching the necessary steps and by discussion of options for training.
3) To provide an environment in which research is presented and heard.
4)
To enable the emerging and experienced scientists to share their work with each other to energize and enlarge the work for all.

The program will include a Welcome from the Science Symposium Chair, Melinda Connor; a Keynote presentation by Dr Ann Baldwin; abstract presentations by symposium participants (selected from submitted proposals); other plenary speakers;  and scientific research panels.  The abstracts presented at the symposium will be published in the Research Symposium Proceedings and have all gone through the peer review process.

2018 Symposium Co-Chair and Plenary Speaker: Dr. Ann Baldwin, Ph.D
Ann Linda Baldwin Ph.D. is Director of Mind-Body-Science and is a Professor of Physiology at the University of Arizona. In her research she studies the physiological effects of mental and emotional stress and quantitatively evaluates methods to reduce stress. In her business, for the last 14 years, she has used Reiki, Biofeedback (sometimes with the help of horses) to help people reduce their pain and tension, improve their sleep, decrease anxiety and improve their performance in all aspects of their lives. Dr. Baldwin is a Master in Usui Holy Fire Reiki and Karuna Reiki and is a leader in the world of scientific Reiki research. She serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Center of Reiki Research and maintains its curated webpage of all peer-reviewed, published, scientific research studies involving Reiki.

Dr. Baldwin obtained her Bachelors degree in Physics from University of Bristol, UK, her Masters degree in Radiation Physics from University of London, UK and her PhD in Physiology from Imperial College, University of London. She has published over 120 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, has received 28 years of funding from National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation and has been a member of several review panels for National Institutes of Health. In her spare time she likes to ride her horse.

Reiki Research – From Pilot Studies to Clinical Trials
 Ann Linda Baldwin, PhD
PURPOSE: Reiki, “Universal Life Force Energy,” was rediscovered and developed in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 1800’s. It involves hands on touch and chi or life force energy, to strengthen the body’s ability to heal. The purpose of this review is to: (i) outline a published method for evaluating Reiki research (The Touchstone Process”, (ii) present an up-to-date analysis of the quality and quantity of Reiki research obtained using this process, and (iii) discuss and justify the need for randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trials.

METHOD: In 2009 a group of scientifically qualified experts in the field of Reiki was selected by William Rand, International Center for Reiki Training, to develop standardized, piloted evaluation forms to assess the quality of original Reiki research papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Papers were identified by searching databases such as Pubmed, PSYCHINFO, MEDLINE and CINAHL, using the following search terms: Reiki, Energy Healing, Energy Healers, Energetic Healing, Alternative Medicine, Alternative, Complementary Medicine and Complementary. Based on evaluation scores from at least two independent reviewers, the papers were graded as “weak”, satisfactory”, “very good” or “excellent”.

RESULTS: As of August 2018 there are 77 original Reiki research articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The higher quality research indicates that Reiki shows some promise as a non-invasive tool for healing at the physical and non-physical levels, particularly regarding the alleviation of pain, depression and anxiety and the maintenance of well being. Although Reiki research is in its infancy, there has been a surge of research productivity in recent decades. However, although 37 peer-reviewed research articles on Reiki have been published within the last 5 years, all but 3 are pilot studies.

CONCLUSION: Although scientific research indicates that Reiki shows some promise as a non-invasive healing modality that is effective for ameliorating pain and stress-related disorders, there is a lack of large-scale clinical trials. Evidence will be presented that such trials are necessary for Reiki to become accepted into mainstream medicine.

Our Emcee Cristina Smith,
Cristina has acted as the ISSSEEM Science Symposium emcee since 2014. A leader in the energy community Cristina founded the Subtle Energy Center in 1993. In parallel, Cristina has served as a marketing executive for several companies. She was the Vice President of Research Development for Integrated Marketing Systems, Director of Marketing for Privacy Solutions, Inc. and Director of Marketing for the Lotus Law Center. Cristina has interviewed a number of highly respected subtle energy researchers and scientists on her former radio show, Subtle Energy Salon. She was invited in 2012 to co-found the Energy Medicine Exchange group on Facebook to continue the ISSSEEM community as it underwent its transition. This group now has about 45,000 members. In 2013, Cristina founded the San Diego Chapter of the Holistic Chamber of Commerce and served as its president until 2016. Cristina has served on numerous local, regional and state Boards of Directors including the League of Women Voters, Blue Sky Ranch, Mid-City Community Clinic, and the Cedar Fire Memorial. A survivor of the Cedar Fire of 2003, Cristina knows personally the devastation that fires bring. She founded the El Capitan Fire Safe Council and was recognized by the State of California in 2015 for her community service in fire prevention and disaster preparedness.  The author of three books, she lives in Nevada City, CA.
